The Battle of Ashingdon Hill was where the Danes completed the conquest of England. Here Canute defeated the Saxon Edmund Ironside, after a long and terrible fight. Imagine the Danish longships lying in wait on the River Crouch for the result..
So the Viking Canute chased Edmond to Gloucestershire, where they agreed to divide the Kingdom and arranged for Canute to succeed to the throne of all England. He had not long to wait, becoming King in 1016.
Move onward six hundred years to the English Civil War, and there is a memorial in the tower of Downham Church to Benjamin Disbrowe. His father led the Parliamentary cavalry at Bristol - and was subsequently General of the Fleet during the Commonwealth.
Like so many Cromwellians, he suffered at the Restoration in 1660 - and was imprisoned on suspicion of involvement in a plot to kill Charles the Second and his mother, Henrietta Maria.
He was released, however, and lived to see his son refashion the house at Femnells.
